MONTEREY ESTATE PLANNING STUDY GROUP


The Monterey Estate Planning Study Group is a Membership Only group that meets monthly to discuss estate planning, trusts, tax and issues that effect our community relative to estate planning. The Member consists of practicing attorneys and CPAs. Continuing education credits are offered. Unless otherwise noted, the group meets in the conference room at the Community Foundation for Monterey County located at 2354 Garden Road, Monterey, CA 93940.

Thursday, February 28, 2008: Options for Defaulting Homeowners: The Legal and Tax Consequences of Foreclosure. Attorney Terry Mallery and CPA Clark Savage will discuss the legal options available instead of foreclosure and the resulting tax consequences of various foreclosure or transfer procedures.

Thursday, March 27, 2008: Trustee Notification - Probate Code Section 16060 et seq. A casual brown bag discussion among Members regarding Trustee Notification, the 120-day statute and sharing of forms and procedure. If there are other items for discussion, please bring them.

Thursday, April 24, 2008: Discovering the Real Wealth of Your Client - Tools for Providing a Valuable Service that Guides Intergenerational Planning.
Attorney Steve Weldon will share strategies and insights into working with clients on a more personal level when discussing transfer of wealth, business and values to successive generations.

Thursday, May 22, 2008: Real Property Taxes, Prop 8 - Reducing Property Taxes Due to Declining Values, and Prop 60 - Transfer of Property Tax Basis for Seniors. Monterey County Assessor, Steve Vagnini and Monterey County Assessor’s Office Appraiser, Lori Beth Merrill, will come to us again for another informative discussion.

Thursday, June 26, 2008: Elder Financial Abuse - Mandated Reporters. Dave Luer, Chief Compliance Officer Wells Fargo Bank, Ritch Lewis, Adult Protective Services, and John O’Brien, President & CEO, Central Coast Seniors will present a discussion on Mandated Reporters - who they are, training, and level of accountability.

Thursday, July 24, 2008: Creating Liquidity in Ill-Liquid Estates - Reverse Mortgages and Other Financial Tools - Options and Limitations. Galen Call, Treehouse Mortgage, Kathryn Harrison, Financial Strategies and Liza Horvath, Wealth Management, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust.
