SANTA CRUZ COUNTY ESTATE PLANNING COUNCIL


The Santa Cruz County Estate Planning Council is a group consisting of estate planning professionals in the Santa Cruz area. Members include bank trustees and private fiduciaries, investment advisors, insurance persons, people who provide services for the elderly, attorneys, CPAs, etc. The group meets once a month and continuing education credits are offered. There are no meetings in June, July, August and September.

Annual dues to join are $10.00 per year which are used to cover copy costs and the cost of the speaker's breakfast. Checks for the dues and the breakfast can be made payable to the SCCEPC and can be paid at the first breakfast meeting attended. No RSVP is needed to attend the meetings.

The meetings take place at the DeLaveaga Golf Course and Country Club House in Santa Cruz (directions below) at 7:15 a.m. Cost is $12.00 whether or not you eat breakfast.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008:
"Life Settlements: Pros & Cons" Ron C. Peck, MBA, from Principal Life and Mel Honda, CLU ChFC, from Wealth Strategies Group, will discuss the pros and cons, the ethics, and the technicalities and tax consequences of selling life insurance policies on 3rd party insureds before they die.

Wednesday, March 19, 2008:
"Understanding the New Rules on Asset Transfers and Medi-Cal" Peter Stern, Esq., well known elder law attorney and Medi-Cal expert, will discuss the new rules related to transferring assets in order to qualify for Medi-Cal.

Wednesday, April 16, 2008:

"When You Get the Call - What Every Estate Planner Should Know about Suing a Nursing Home" Leslie Finnegan and Mike Matsuda are attorneys with Nolan, Hamerly, Etienne and Hoss, in Salinas, and they will discuss their first hand knowledge of this subject.

Wednesday, May 21, 2008:

"Recent Developments in Estate and Gift Taxation."  Mike McCombs, former District Director of the IRS District
that services Northern California, and now, Tax Director of Abbott, Stringham & Lynch, a large accounting firm in San Jose, will discuss current topics of interest in the area of estate taxation.

Wednesday, October 15, 2008:
"Tenancies in Common - A Viable Alternative to FLPs and LLCs." Michael Eckstein, a
cofounder of FMV Opinions, and an expert on valuations and valuation discounts, will compare undivided interest discounts with FLP and LLC discounts.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008:
"How to Reduce Estate, Ordinary Income and Capital Gains Taxes for your Clients using
Qualified, but Little Known Planned Giving Strategies." Kelly G. Kidwell, President of Pacific Advisors, Inc. of Claremont, CA, will discuss little known charitable giving techniques that can benefit both the donor and donee.

Wednesday, December 17, 2008:
"A Year End Roundtable Discussion on All the 2008 Changes in the Laws and Cases
related to Estate Planning, Trusts and Probate." Michael G. Desmarais, James Quillinan and Robert Temmerman are all well known San Jose attorneys and experts in the fields of Estate Planning, Trusts and Probate.
